Whilst certain of the inhabitants may prefer to purchase traditionally known brands, it is becoming increasingly evident that many are not able to afford these products and as a result, they are becoming or deemed to become luxury items. This should never be the case with cleaning and detergent products as every household should have access to these important products that will contribute towards them living hygienically.
Overall Township and Rural communities spend billions of rands on an annual basis and most of this spending leaves the townships. However, by empowering locals to be able to produce and sell or resell detergent and cleaning products, it provides an ideal opportunity for the Township economy to grow truly. Whilst there are many interventions by government and private companies, many of them are still geared toward the outflow of revenues from the townships with very little remaining for further development and expansion. Many of the current economic activities take place through mainstream retail outlets – although, creating employment opportunities, is not nearly enough to alleviate the burgeoning employment crises that exist in South Africa. Big brands and chain stores still dominate economic activities in the Townships and to an extent in Rural areas – this is supported by spaza shops, which together with Chain stores do provide an important retail function to residents. Even though these institutions do exist and continue to exist, the emergence and growth of other smaller business activities, albeit less formal is pivotal to propelling economic activities and another level – this does not mean that current business is annulated, it means that the pie is being spread – customer have more opportunities and choices – but more importantly, the spirit entrepreneurship is kindled – a basic and essential component of any developing economy like South Africa.
Creating opportunities for locals to be able to sell to neighbours, friends and their communities will create employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for these individuals. There is likely to be a ripple effect on other value chain items – hence growing the economy.
Furthermore, studies have shown that many stokvels exist in the townships. It is a pivotal and vital means of collective buying power and prior buying to support individuals that are part of these stokvels. Training and providing manufacturing opportunities as well as selling opportunities will allow identified stokvel members or communities that they support to be able to participate more meaningfully – in that they can get quality products at very competitive prices. They will be able to have more for less but the with main priority of supporting their members whilst contributing to a growing and maintaining the economy in the communities in which these individuals come from. In that way,, communities can prosper economically and socially, enabling a more stable environment for those who live and participate in these communities.
