When working with Chemicals – even if they are not harmful, it is essential that you work in a well-ventilated area, away from food and animals and ensure that the following safety precautions are taken:
- Always use the recommended safety equipment/personal protective equipment (PPE) recommended by the suppliers.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions as provided by the supplier.
- On request, the Material Safety Data Sheets is available from the supplier.
- Know which chemicals are corrosive and those that are not.
- The above must be followed to avoid injuries from occurring.
- Although most chemicals used in the manufacturing of Detergents are relatively harmless, you are nonetheless working with chemicals, and you need to ensure that you protect yourself and those that are around you.
In the event of first Aid being required, the following general principles are applied:
- If inhalation of chemicals occurs and causes irritation to the respiratory tract, immediately stop working and move to a ventilated area away from the chemicals. If the irritation persists, seek medical attention.
- If spillage occurs on any part of the body, immediately remove clothing and wash with running water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
NOTE: Always use the recommended safety gear/equipment when working with chemicals. If not sure, please make contact with the supplier.
Raw Chemical are sold in different types
- Liquid
- Gel
- Paste
- Powder
- Flakes
- Prills
- Granules
It is very important for the manufacturer to have knowledge of these chemicals regarding:
- Flammability – which may cause a fire.
- Corrosive – which may result in skin burn.
- Fumes – which could cause a fire.
- Gas – which may irritate the respiratory tract.
- PH level of what is used – to understand whether the material used is Acidic, neutral, or basic.
Chemicals should always be kept in a safe place and isolated away from children (locked) as well as away from possible causes of fire. Always follow the below when handling and or storing chemicals:
- Do not breathe or taste raw chemicals
- Do not store raw chemicals directly on the floor. Always store on a raised platform similar to a pallet.
- Ensure that raw chemicals are checked daily to avoid gas build up and spillages
- Ensure that they are kept in a ventilated space
- Ensure that eye protection, nose protection and hand protection are used
Raw chemicals should be packed in a manner that is allowed when transported to avoid pressing them against each other and breathing gas during the trip.
It is important to get assisted by the supplier or get more information from doing research than getting to the manufacturing stage and experimenting that may result in unnecessary incidents occurring.
Ensure that they are kept in a correct position during the journey and during storage to be always safe.
Always ensure that the chemicals are properly labeled and this is visible. Keep away from Children at all times.
